MUSCAT: Feb. 14: Oman Air has set a record by paying $75 million for a pair of take-off and landing slots at Heathrow Airport in London. According to a newspaper report in London, the national carrier of the Sultanate is understood to have bought the pair — which includes a highly prized early morning arrival — from Air France-KLM.
The price beats the $60 million (£40 million) paid by American Airlines for a slot a year ago, bought from the Scandinavian carrier SAS. Air France also sold a slot for a lower price to Emirates, giving the Gulf airline six daily flights to Dubai from the London airport. The Oman acquisition — which will be used for a 5.30am arrival from Muscat — underlines the appeal of the congested airport to international airlines.

In January, the Abdulrahman bin Harith al Busaidy, Chief Operating Officer of Oman Air, said that a second frequency would be added to the carrier’s current daily non-stop service between Muscat and London Heathrow from March 27.
To cater to passengers travelling onwards to across the Atlantic, flights will leave Muscat at 1 am and arrive in London at 5.30 am. The return flight will leave at 8.30 am and arrive in Muscat at 7 pm. Oman Air’s Muscat to Paris service will be increased to offer daily flights throughout the week.
