Dart to introduce buses on city roads in mini-trial phase

The Dar Rapid Transit (DART) will next week start final trials using 30 to 50 buses in a move geared towards giving drivers enough experience with the newly-built roads and traffic lights, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said yesterday.

“They are going to start with between 30 and 50 buses which will be passing on all roads earmarked for the project,” the PM said when he made an impromptu visit at the Ferry Fish International Market in Dar es Salaam. He made the visit to see gas-powered stoves at the market as well as inspect construction of a fence that separates the market and DART.

The Premier added: “It is important for other road users such as motorcycle riders, commuter bus drivers and pedestrians to understand how DART buses will be operating.”The PM said that authorities responsible for the DART project were busy installing ticketing machines, where passengers would be required to have special payment cards for them to access the transport services.

He said the start of the DART project would be a relief to fishmongers at the Ferry International Fish Market and other Dar es Salaam city residents.

The 400bn/- project was scheduled to take off in January, but progress stalled over an 8bn/- import duty debt owed to the government.
