Kificho has served as Speaker in the House of Representatives for 25 years.
The election to choose a new Speaker was conducted at Chama Cha Mapinduzi headquarters at Kisiwandui in the supervision of the former Second Vice President Ambassador Seif Ali Idd.
Speaking to newsmen after the election, CCM’s Isles Ideology and Publicity Secretary, Waride Bakar Jabu stressed that all the contenders were discussed by the Central Committee and three names were reviewed to contest for the post.The three names passed to contest were former Infrastructure and Communication minister Zuberi Ali Maulidi, former House of Representatives Speaker Pandu Ameir Kificho and long serving lawyer Janeth Nora Sekihola.
The committee had received eight names of aspirants to contest for the post that included former Home Affairs Deputy Minister Pereira Ame Silima, Abdalla Waziri Ramadhan, former House of Representative member for Kikwajuni, Mahamoud Mohamed Mussa and retired lawyer Sekihola.
Others were David Mwakanjuki, former Infrastructure and Communication minister Zuberi Ali Maulidi and CCM Youth Wing chairman Sadifa Juma Khamis, who withdrew from the race before the voting process began.
Waride said Zuberi Ali Maulidi emerged victorious after garnering 55 votes, former Speaker Kificho got 11 votes and Sekiola managed to get only four votes with two votes being spoilt.
Briefing journalists after emerging victorious in the race, the newly elected Speaker, Zuberi Ali Maulidi pledged to bring about real change by ensuring that the House executes its duties effectively.
However, he said despite the House lacking members from the opposition camp, he will stand firm to ensure elected members implement their daily activities for the benefit of the people in the Isles.
“I will use my knowledge and experience as Speaker in executing my duties according to the constitution,” he declared.
Admitting his loss, former Speaker Kificho said he accepted defeat because democracy had been exercised.
He said the election was free and fair, wishing the newly elected House of Representatives Speaker the best of luck when implementing his duties.
“There is losing and winning in every race. I have to accept that my time as Speaker after serving for close to 25 years has finally come to an end,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Shein has appointed Said Hassan Said, the Isles new attorney general with immediate effect.
