MARA Regional Commissioner (RC), Magesa Mulongo has ordered that land used for illegal cultivation of bhang be utilized for sunflowers farming.

“All bhang farms should now be turned into sunflower farms “, the RC ordered during his first working tour that he made in Tarime District early this week.

Tarime has been known as one of the bhang growing zones in the region with the illegal crop reportedly getting good prices in markets in one of the neighbouring East African countries.Mr Mulongo directed village government chairpersons to ensure that there is no more bhang growing in their areas. He gave a one-month ultimatum for ending bhang growing in the district.

Earlier Tarime District Commissioner (DC), Glorius Luoga said bhang growing is one of the greatest challenges they face. “We have of late burned 12 hectares of bhang farms and operation is underway “, Mr Luoga said in his report to the RC.

Mr Luoga said the district authorities have decided to start providing a 100,000/- reward to every good citizen who provides information that will help to end bhang farming in the area.
