Perks of a vegan diet!

How many of you know the difference between veganism and vegetarianism? Struggling to think? Let me help. Vegetarianism is when you do not eat meat, chicken or seafood, but consume eggs and milk. Veganism, on the other hand, means bidding farewell to any animal product in your meals. This means no honey, no animal products in your meals as well as makeup and clothes; it also means no leather seats or skins used as carpets.
So, why do people go vegan? The cruelty with which animals are treated in commercial abattoirs is the driving force behind the rise of veganism. But is it actually good for your health and overall wellness? Here are some reasons why veganism might just be worth considering!
Cardiovascular diseases
A British study shows that a vegan diet can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases due to lowered cholesterol levels when processed foods, dairy and red meats are absent in one's diet.
Type II Diabetes
When you leave out the fatty processed foods that include red meat and sausages and dairy derivatives, you will notice that, over a period of time, your sugar levels will actually stabilise significantly.
Prostate cancer
A major study was conducted with men who showed early signs of prostate cancer and were recommended to try the vegan diet. They seemed to either reduce or eliminate the symptoms completely.
Lactose intolerance
Research shows that as many as 79 per cent of the total population may now be lactose intolerant and leaving out dairy can help with various respiratory ailments, migraines, obesity and inflammation of the joints.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics that are frequently given to feed animals can lead to bacterial resistance within humans. Many of the antibiotics used to treat human infections are also used to feed animals. Consistently ingesting these antibiotics will render them useless for when human bodies actually need them.
Hormones
Consuming non-vegetarian foods where the meats have been injected with hormones to speed up growth (a common practice in the meat industry) means those hormones go into your body. Not only can this disrupt the natural balance of your hormones, but some of the hormones given to animals can lead to growth of tumors.
It is advisable to start phasing out animal products slowly. Start with eliminating the processed deli and frozen options and then phase meats out to replace with wholesome organic produce. Try it out and see how far you can go!
