The Diaspora Unit in the Department of International Cooperation of the Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) in the President's Office and the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council which has a mandate to coordinate diaspora affairs with the view of engaging Zanzibaris in different countries in socio-economic development of Zanzibar, has issued a heartfelt call to Zanzibaris living abroad, urging them to register their names on a dedicated website This initiative seeks to harness the strength of the diaspora communities for a common cause—enhancing mutual aid and solidarity among Zanzibaris worldwide.
In recent years, Zanzibaris have increasingly dispersed across the globe, creating vibrant communities in various countries. Recognizing and realizing that the potential of these Zanzibaris living abroad could contribute significantly to the development and well-being of their homeland, the government's call to register aims to build a comprehensive database of Zanzibaris living abroad. This database will serve as a vital resource for coordination during emergencies, facilitate networking and collaboration on projects, and enhance cultural and social connections.
Through the registration process, Zanzibaris will be able to share their skills, expertise, and resources, creating a network that can respond effectively to various challenges faced by individuals and communities both within Zanzibar and abroad. This collective effort not only strengthens ties among Zanzibaris but also reinforces a sense of unity and belonging to the island nation, regardless of geographical distance.
Moreover, the registration platform is designed to provide Zanzibaris abroad with access to information about government programs, events, and opportunities for engagement. It serves as a bridge for collaboration between the diaspora and local institutions, facilitating meaningful contributions to development initiatives, healthcare projects, education programs, and other areas of national interest.
By registering on the website, Zanzibaris abroad will demonstrate their commitment to supporting each other and their homeland, fostering a spirit of solidarity that transcends borders. The government of Zanzibar views the diaspora as a crucial partner in its efforts to build a prosperous and inclusive future for all citizens, reflecting a shared responsibility and pride in Zanzibari identity.
These efforts of uniting Zanzibaris the world over are spearheaded and masterminded by bi Maryam Hamoud who is the Deputy Director of the Diaspora Unit, under the able leadership of the new Director Dr. Haji Gora.
In addition, Zanzibari associations are also registered on the website from different countries. There are a number of such associations worldwide. So far there are 6 such associations on the website and more are to come forward. These 6 associations are:
Zanzibar Diaspora Humanitarian Organisation of UK.
According to Bi Maryam, the aim here is to ensure that all Zanzibaris are aware of these associations, which they may not know do exist within their own communities.
Through this initiative of the Diaspora Unit, Zanzibaris are encouraged to embrace their role as global ambassadors for their culture, heritage, and values, contributing actively to the collective advancement and well-being of their communities, wherever they may reside.
