Dubai has not physically "removed" borders
but has implemented a new AI-powered immigration corridor at its airports that removes the need for eligible travelers to present physical passports. This new system, part of the "Travel Without Borders" initiative, allows passengers to pass through immigration seamlessly using facial recognition technology. Key features of the AI immigration corridor:
- Seamless passage: Passengers can walk through a designated lane without stopping, while AI-powered cameras scan their faces and verify their identity against pre-registered biometric data.
- Rapid clearance: The corridor can process up to 10 passengers simultaneously, with clearance taking as little as 14 seconds. This replaces the need for traditional passport counters, smart gates, or manual document checks.
- Expanded access: The system builds on previous "smart tunnel" technology but expands the scope to process groups of people, not just individuals.
- Enhanced security: While the process is faster, security is maintained by instantly flagging any anomalies for review by specialized security teams.
- Phased rollout: The AI corridor was initially launched in Terminal 3's First and Business Class lounges at Dubai International Airport (DXB), with plans to eventually expand to other terminals and airports.
Eligibility
This "borderless" system is for eligible travelers who have pre-registered their biometric data. First-time travelers will need to register via an app or at a kiosk upon arrival, after which they can use the seamless system. This system complements Dubai's existing smart gates, which are still available for eligible passport holders who choose to use them.
