MP refutes shooting reports

Arumeru East MP, Joshua Nassari

   30th October 2012
  Arusha RPC exonerates him

Arumeru East MP Joshua Nassari has issued a 14-day altumatum to two Kiswahili newspapers to retract claims that he fired into the air live bullets during a civic by-election at Daraja Mbili in the district last Sunday.
Addressing journalists here yesterday, Nassari said the two newspapers portrayed him in bad light and so damaged his public image, especially considering that he wasn’t at the alleged scene on the fateful day.
“If the two papers do not apologise within fourteen days I will file a complaint with the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT).
He said the two papers were apparently being used by his political enemies to mudsling him and his party, Chadema.

“I remember on Sunday morning I went to the area, but I stayed there for a very brief period before I proceeding to Bang’ata ward in Arumeru district to supervise a civic by-election. The reported firing incident in the area was done at around 1pm by someone else who is now in police hands. I don’t know where these people get such wrong information,” he wondered.
Arusha regional police commander Liberatus Sabasi confirmed yesterday that Nassari wasn’t involved in the incident.
“I don’t know where these two journalists got that information,” he said.
He said the police were holding Godfrey Mwalusamba, who allegedly fired the bullets in the area to disperse people who were beating a certain woman who was allegedly dishing out money to voters as a bribe for them to vote for her party's candidate.
Mwalusamba was later released after being interrogated by the police.
On Monday 'Uhuru' and 'Habari Leo' newspapers reported that the Arumeru East lawmaker was involved in the incident in which he allegedly fired bullets into the air.
