Police IG Loti Dzonzi: Demote Mtekama
Malawi’s renowned crime buster Bob Mtekama who has just been demoted from being Malawi’s Head of CID to a mere station officer for Phalombe Police Station is heading for Zanzibar to finish his law degree.
Insiders and close friends of the revered cop said Mtekama will be going back to the University of Zanzibar to finish his law degree which he abandoned after his appointment as Director of Malawi Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
“Many are wondering why he has been demoted. It’s pure office politics. There is a woman in the operations department who has been peddling lies about Bob because she wants the former Head of CID Lexa Chalera to come back to this position. These lies even reached State House and no wonder he has been demoted,” said the source.
“But for Bob, he confided in some of his friends that he is going back to Zanzibar to finish his law degree at the University of Zanzibar. He abandoned the programme when he was appointed Director, he would not be going to Phalombe after all,” said the source from Area 30 Police Headquarters in Lilongwe.
Chalera is known for her unethical tactics in handling crime. She is the one who arrested current Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Ralph Kasambara during the late Bingu wa Mutharika regime.
It is alleged that she forced Kasambara to undress in her presence during the arrest at his Nyambadwe home.
Mtekama on the other hand is a respected cop and managed to solve series of crimes including the arrest of hardcore armed robber Clive Macholowe and also the Chiradzulu serial murders.
He was also instrumental in arresting the first two suspects in the Robert Chasowa murder, the Indebank boss murder in Soche east by the house boy and guard.
Mtekama is the only FBI trained local cop, and Malawi’s only hand-writting and DNA expert in the police service.
