TWENTY-EIGHT Zambian fishermen have been arrested by Tanzanian police for allegedly straying into the neighbouring country, police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela has said.
A team of defence and security officers have since travelled to Tanzania to negotiate the release of the 28, who were arrested on Tanzanian waters.
They are being held at Matai Police Station in that country.
Ms Kanjela said in Lusaka yesterday that all the 28 were male from Tonga Village in Chief Tafuna’s area of Mpulungu District.
“The incident occurred on Monday this week around 05:00 hours on Lake Tanganyika but we only got a report today around 08:00 hours.
“It is alleged that the 28 fishermen were found fishing on Tanzanian waters and are in custody right now, but a team of combined security and defence wing officers have travelled to Tanzania for negotiations,” Ms Kanjela said.
In another development, a one-day-old-baby was dumped by its mother at Lusaka’s Chingwere Cemetery.
The male baby was believed to have been dumped around 11:30 hours yesterday and was only picked up by a passerby who alerted the police.
Meanwhile, Humphrey Tembo, 29, died on the spot in Chingola after being hit by a front-end loader which was being driven by a Mr Kaoma, 27, of Mine Police Camp in Nchanga North.
