Dr Slaa said corruption among public leaders was at an appalling level as millions of shillings have been siphoned by greedy leaders.
He made the remarks in Dar es Salaam yesterday when addressing party members from higher learning institutions under the party’s organization known as Chadema Students Organisations (Chaso).
The opposition party secretary general said the proliferation of such acts masterminded by leaders holding public office was clear sign of government failure to lead the country.
He said some public leaders are busy amassing wealth through corruption, leaving majority of the members of the public with nothing to do.
Dr Slaa said moral decay is at its highest, involving leaders. He said recent incidents whereby some police and politicians were arrested in possessing elephant tusks illegally showed the nation was at a crossroads.
Also, he cited a recent incident whereby a ship belonging to a high profile CCM leader that was involved in the shipment of four tonnes of tusks.
The fact that no measures were taken against the owner indicated a high level of moral decay among leaders, Dr Slaa said, also mentioning illegal transportation of four tonnes of elephant tusks outside the country with no action being taken against suspects.
“The ship used to transport those elephant tusks is owned by a CCM leader, who has admitted the fact but to date no legal measures have been taken against him,” he said.
Furthermore, he said the inspector general of police and other police force staff should resign for failing to pacify students following a strike last week at the Institute of Finance Management (IFM) when they were demanding their rights to safety.
Instead, he said, the police started firing tear gas and attacking students rather than solving the basic problem by providing adequate protection.
Meanwhile, the Chadema Secretary General advised the government to maintain good education standard and criticized the decision to reduce the pass marks in schools. Dr Slaa also said he was aware of disinformation being used by security organs in social networks to destabilize Chadema. To that effect he claimed some $85,0000 has been made available to control and destroy the opposition in the country.
And according to Chadema Youth Chairman John Heche, the government has failed to meet peoples’ requirements including providing electricity, water and all the basic needs.
On the Rapid Bus Project in Dar es Salaam, he claimed this was likely to benefit few people but unlikely to end the transport problem in Dar es Salaam.
