MUSCAT — His Majesty Sultan Qaboos has issued a Royal pardon for those convicted with defamation, information technology crimes and unauthorised rallies.
The Royal pardon will go into effect from today.
The Royal pardon takes into account the welfare of the families of the inmates and their social conditions after they were jailed for varying periods during which they underwent reformative and rehabilitation programmes.
Last year, the top court upheld the jail terms and fines handed down on some of them by the lower courts after finding them guilty of defamation, incitement and violation of IT Law.
The Public Prosecution considers offensive writings and inciting calls as a blatant violation of the sanctity of personal life. It says such writings count as a libel against the individuals or because of their job positions. Also such negative acts may eventually harm the homeland, individuals and national interests.
It further says these verbal or written insults are contrary to the religious teachings, rich traditions and noble morals that are deeply integrated in the Omani society. Besides going against public law and order. — ONA
