New link shorter by 800 km
compared to existing one — MUSCAT — The road linking Oman with Saudi
Arabia, shorter by 800 km compared to the existing road, will be ready by the
end of 2014, said Khalil bin Abdullah al Khonji, Chairman of Oman Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (OCCI). Giving details of the road, he said that this
road will serve the Sultanate in general and the Governorate of Al Dhahirah in
particular and will boost travel between the two countries, as well as
contribute in the development of trade relations and the growing exports and
imports between the two countries. He said that the private sector,
especially in the governorate, is having high hopes on this project to revive
the economy in the governorate, and promote trade and investment in Saudi in
particular and the Arab world in general.
He
added that OCCI has presented this route as a major theme at a conference on
the development of the Dhahirah Governorate’s economy, which was organised by
the chamber in March 2013.
Al Khonji called on various parties, private sector
in the governorate in particular and the Sultanate in general to take advantage
of this important road link, which is the second border outlet of the Sultanate
after the road that links it with the United Arab Emirates, and is shorter by
800 km compared to the existing road. He affirmed that it is important that all
services and facilities are available along this road for travellers, such as
fuel stations and other services, besides all required facilities.
He
highlighted the importance of linking the new road with the railway line, which
is expected to pass through the Governorate of Al Dhahirah, urging those
in-charge of the project to take into account the future development of
shipments and exports where Ibri and the governorate in general, one of the
main stations, particularly that the governorate is considered a hub for
regional trade routes with the required logistics, such as stores, warehouses
and other services necessary for the establishment and growth of business in
future. —
