EAC denies diplomatic tensions between Rwanda and Tanzania

BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

3rd September 2013

Charles Njoroge, Deputy Secretary General Responsible for Political Federation
The Council of the East African Community (EAC) has said that it has not received an official notification declaring diplomatic misunderstandings between Tanzania and Rwanda.

The statement was issued yesterday by Deputy Secretary General Responsible for Political Federation, Charles Njoroge during the 2nd East African University Students’ debates on Regional Integration held in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Njoroge said, the Community has not received official statements from the heads of the two states informing them about the diplomatic misunderstandings and hence the community does not acknowledge the matters as political brawl.

He said: “Tanzania’s and Rwanda’s relations have been in good for ages, hence utterances should not spur tensions between the two states.”

Njoroge said some initiatives have been discussed so as to reach a consensus between the two countries and that there will be no risk of breaking up the community.
He said, the Community will continue to strengthen the EAC integration and sub-regional organisations so as to maintain peace and good relations.

In another development Njoroge cleared the unfounded information that Tanzania has been expelled from the Community following last week’s meeting of heads of the region who discussed key proposals to deepen the integration without the input of Tanzania.

Njoroge explained that Tanzania was not invited because the projects under discussion (including an oil pipeline project and a standard gauge railway project) involved only the three countries in attendance, (Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda).

He said the meeting was ostensibly to discuss cross-border infrastructure projects and specific issues to be addressed by the concerned countries.

Njoroge has emphasised on unity and cooperation among the East African states so as to further strengthen the relations and cooperation between our countries.
