Tanzania, China firms sign 7 contracts worth over 2trn/-

The government of Tanzania yesterday signed seven contracts with six Chinese companies worth 2.72trn/- (USD 1.7 billion) covering power projects and construction of residential and commercial buildings.

The signing of the agreements was witnessed by Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda and other Tanzanian ministers accompanying the Premier in his nine day official tour to China.

The signing of the agreements was done after the Premier officially opened the Tanzania China Business Forum held at Dong Fang Hotel in Guangzhou City.

The Forum was organised in partnership with Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) and China Africa Business Council-CABC and had participants from China and Tanzania.

The pacts were signed between Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and Tabiau Electric Apparatus Stock Co Ltd (TBEA) for construction of a power transmission line with a capacity of 400kv to joined to the national grid from Dar es Salaam to the northeastern regions up to Arusha.

Tanesco Acting Director General Felchesmi Mramba signed the contract worth USD 692.7 million. Mramba also signed another agreement with Shanghai Electric Power Company for the construction of Kinyerezi III power plant.

Another pact was between Tanesco and China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) in which the company agreed to develop the Rumakali hydro- power project in the Northern Highlands regions. However the feasibility study on the two projects is still in progress.

Mkonge Energy Systems Ltd owned by a Tanzanian businessman Salum Shamte signed an agreement with Sino Hydro Resources Ltd for Masigira hydro-power project at a cost of USD 136 million.

On the other hand, National Housing Corporation (NHC), Director General Nehemia Mchechu signed an agreement with China Railway Jianchang Engineering (CRJE) to inject USD 500 million financial support to the corporation for construction of residential houses and commercial buildings.

Mchechu also signed another financial and technical cooperation agreement worth USD 200 million with Poly Technologies (POLY) Company for the construction of residential and commercial houses in Masaki, Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam.

National Development Corporation (NDC) Director General Gideon Nassari signed an agreement worth USD 136 million with Dalian International Economic & Technical Cooperation Group (CDIG) and Hydro China Kunming Engineering Corporation for the construction of a Centre for Research and Training on Alternative Energy. The construction site has not been specified.

Tanzania Investment Centre Executive Director Julieth Kairuki said that a total of 46 companies and institutions investing and trading in Tanzania were participating in the Tanzania China Business Forum and CABC has registered 44 companies to take part in the forum.

These pacts are an addition to last week’s when the Premier signed five Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing.

The MoUs cover the science and technology industry, another encompasses the sell of ocean products to China, while another one the tourism industry. Then textile process zone meant to boost cotton farming in the country and finally an MoU to offer land for the construction of a modern Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam.
