His death was confirmed by NCCR-Mageuzi National Chairman, James Mbatia, who told The Guardian that Dr Mvungi who was also the party’s National Executive Council Member died at around 3:30pm yesterday. Mbatia did not give further details.
Dr Mvungi (61) who was a member of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) was critically wounded when fighting off machete-wielding suspected robbers, on November 2, this year at his residence.
He was first admitted at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) intensive care unit in Dar es Salaam, but his condition remained critical, prompting the referral to Milpark Hospital in Parktown West, Johannesburg, South Africa on November 7.
The CRC in its statement yesterday said it was making arrangements to bring back the body of Dr Mvungi for burial and would issue further details today.
Dr Mvungi’s nephew Deogratius Mwarabu narrating incident recently, told reporters that the suspected robbers entered the victim’s room where they found his wife and ordered her to give them money.
Without mentioning the amount, Mwarabu said the wife gave them some cash but they demanded for more and threatened to kill her if she failed to comply with their wish.
The wife defended herself that; it was all the money she had.
Dar es Salaam Special Zone police has so far arrested nine suspects and retrieved the victim’s laptop, pistol and undisclosed sum of money.
Dr Mvungi attained his Juris doctorate at Hamburg University in Germany after he had successfully getting his bachelor and Master degrees of law at the University of Dar es Salaam.
Prior to his post as a member of CRC, Dr Mvungi was Advocate of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Tanzania.
He was a Commissioner for Oaths and Notary Public and had been a Dean of the Faculty of Law and lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, and a Board Membership and Affiliation Vice Chairman for the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT).
Until his death he was Deputy Vice Chancellor - University of Bagamoyo.
Mvungi also worked as journalist with Uhuru and Mzalendo newspapers in the 70s and 80s, before leaving to pursue law studies.
