Mohammed says development plans will continue with or without Expo
“We are optimistic (we will win the bid) and have whatever it takes to host the world event,” Shaikh Mohammed told members of the Press at the Dubai Government Media Office on Thursday.
Shaikh Mohammed said while the city would be the best host city, the country needed to remain realistic. “Winning is always an ally of the UAE, whether with or without the Expo...we are involved in the achievement of our development plans.”
He thanked all those countries which had so far backed the UAE as the best candidate for the title.
He also recognised the great efforts which have been exerted by a number of parties in throwing their weight behind the bid, including governmental organisations and other working groups.“We have gained considerable experience with the participation of several parties, ranging from the State Department and even the working groups...we are confident of our capabilities and that we have the power of the elements of our trademark (against) our competitors.”

The final tweaks to the country’s Expo bid were made on Thursday, with a final 20-minute presentation to be made to the deciding board being fine-tuned, in the run-up to the announcement on November 27.The Dubai Expo 2020 Higher Committee meeting, chaired by Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, reviewed the final presentation that will be given on decision day, at the 154thBureau International des Exhibitions (BIE) General Assembly in Paris.
Members of the higher committee stressed the importance of continuing the hard work through till the final vote while recognising every segment of the UAE community for their “overwhelming and unprecedented” support, as well as from backers around the globe.
The committee said this support was what continued to differentiate the Dubai Expo 2020 bid.
Shaikh Mohammed fielded questions from the journalists gathered on a range of other topics aside from the Expo bid, including on the state of affairs in the troubled surrounding region. He hoped Syria would emerge from its current standoff, while he also expressed confidence in Egypt’s ability to overcome the challenges to restore security and stability it was facing.
He wished for peace to prevail but said he believed that throughout the Arab world all countries experiencing unstable situations would overcome the current juncture to reach a new stage of their people, towards progress and prosperity.
Shaikh Mohammed reserved special praise for the members of his audience, saying the media helped the country to progress to a better level.
The media supported the activities of government by monitoring its performance, detecting any mistakes and shortcomings and bringing it to the attention of officials. Shaikh Mohammed also urged those in the fourth estate to establish good relationships and connections with officials, in order to ensure the flow of accurate firsthand information.
He reminded those gathered about their “great responsibility” as a vital partner within the community. “I’m proud of you and for keeping pace with the rapid progress,” he told the media, reminding them to serve all members of the community and highlight the country’s achievements as well.
Shaikh Mohammed attributed his optimism about the future to the strength of the UAE Union and his great confidence in Emirati people. He said national celebrations, such as Flag Day the UAE has just celebrated and National Day, which will be marked on December 2, was a chance to reflect on achievements. The country would continue to strive for the constant performance progress within the federal and local government sectors.
“Consent and satisfaction of people are the top priorities we work for,” he said, adding the recently announced Dubai smart city initiative marked the beginning of a new era, where services would be more accessible around the clock.
The progress being made, including the economic capacity and the creation of the country as a hub for world trade, was only possible as a result of strategic planning, clear objectives and because of the work done by the country’s founding fathers.
