Police: Xmas peaceful

Police in the major cities of the country have said that Christmas celebrations were peaceful, attributing this to beefed up security done in collaboration with the public.

In interviews the regional police commanders (RPC) for Ilala, Temeke, Kinondoni, Mbeya, Arusha and Mwanza told The Guardian that generally the Christmas Day peaceful, save for minor incidents reported in some regions.

Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Camillius Wambura, said three deaths were reported to the police.

Wambura said that one person a Chinese national identified by single name Wang was found dead in a swimming pool at Golden Tulip Hotel.

He said that the deceased was a tourist who was staying at the hotel and at around 13:00 hours on Tuesday he went to the swimming pool.

The RPC said preliminary investigations have shown that Wang was overwhelmed by water in the pool.

He said the body of the deceased is preserved at Muhimbili National Hospital for further investigations.

In another incident Ally Sheki (17), a Gongo la Mboto resident and student at Msata Secondary School was found dead at Coco Beach.

According to the RPC investigations into the circumstances that lead to the death of the student is in progress. The body of Sheki is preserved at the Mwananyamala Hospital.

Wambura said police have arrested Tumaini Manyama, a Madale resident on suspicion of shooting and seriously injuring Antony Shoni.

He said that Manyama is alleged to have shot Shoni after a misunderstanding between the two at Madale at around 22.45 hours on Tuesday.

He said Shoni has been admitted at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) for treatment.

For her part, Ilala Regional Police Commander Marietha Minangi said: “Things are normal in Ilala. No major incidents have been reported.”

For his part Zanzibar Police Commissioner, Hamdani Omary Makame, said the situation was peaceful on Christmas Day.

Makame attributed this to the tight police patrols in various corners of the isles including at churches and areas with big concentrations of people.

However, he said that Police will continue to strengthen security in the isles to ensure that the Christmas and New Year celebrations are held peacefully.

Arusha RPC Liberatus Sabas, and Mwanza RPC Valentino Mlowela told The Guardian that the situation in their regions was normal.

They said there are no serious incidents had been reported up to yesterday evening.

For his part, Mbeya RPC Bekaeli Masaki said till yesterday there was only one reported accident which led to death of a child aged nine years old.
Masaki said the child was killed by a car as he rode on a bicycle on a road in Mbalizi District.
