The two gave the plea shortly after being sworn in by President Jakaya Kikwete at the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The ceremony was also attended by Vice-President Dr Mohamed Ghalib Bilal, Chief Secretary Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, Chief of Defence forces General Davis Mwamunyange, ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Heads of security units.
IGP Mangu told the press that crimes have always been a challenge in the country and only by improving relationship between the citizens and law enforcers the situation can addressed.
“I am aware of the rate of crime in the country. This is our first priority to tackle as we take office,” said IGP Mangu.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abdulrahaman Kaniki said: “Our target is to work in collaboration with ordinary people to ensure that the police force serves the people.” The retired IGP Said Mwema applauded his successor for being appointed the new IGP but mostly thanked the general public for their collaboration during his term in office.
Before his appointment Commissioner Ernest Mangu served as the Police Director of Criminal Intelligence, Regional Police Commander for Coast and Mwanza regions while his Deputy served as Commissioner for Forensic Investigation.
The Deputy IGP is a new post in the force.
