Tanzania: Commercial Hunting Licences Should Be Banned Forthwith

GOD created man so that he could have dominion over the fish of the sea, the fowl of the air and over the animals and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.
It was a mammoth commissioning and responsibility from the sovereign of the universe. There is a joke in the tourism industry that the Ngorongoro Crater is where Noah's Ark came to rest. Many visitors agree that the Ngorongoro Crater, a sunken caldera two thousand feet down, is a place like no other in the world.
Looked at it globally, Tanzania is just a tiny corner in the world but the country is unequalled on earth in terms of the numbers and sheer diversity of wildlife.
It is an honour from the Creator of everything that the country carries, not only for its citizens and their generations, but as heritage of the entire human race.
Because it is hard to reverse carelessness, many parts of the world today are without the animals that once roamed their plains freely.
By the grace of God, Tanzania is the last Eden on earth. And over the years, the country has done a commendable job to conserve and preserve not only its Divine gift of plenty of wildlife, but also some of the world's most unique ecologies and ecosystems.
However, gangs of men without morals have recently pounced on National Parks and Game Reserves with demonic force and determination to wipe out the country's wildlife.
It is an undisputed fact that Tanzania is the last country in the world where large herds of elephants still roam the wilderness freely. But the animals, which are pure delight to watch, have been the target of bands of marauding poachers who kill the gracious animals for no other reason than the tusks they carry.
In China there is a belief that chopsticks made from ivory neutralise poison in food, offering part of the incentive for killing the otherwise harmless animals.
Elephants don't eat meat, they only eat grass! The government released wildlife census results Friday, which indicated that the elephant population in the Selous-Mikumi ecosystem has dropped alarmingly to about 13,000 animals, only from an estimated 110,000 animals 40 years ago.
It is for that reason that we support the government's initiative to turn wildlife conservation into a paramilitary service. The government should also revoke and ban with immediate effect, all commercial hunting licences.
A Kiswahili saying warns that if you play with monkeys, you will harvest stalks of maize only. Poachers are like monkeys. If we play with them, soon there will be no elephant left in the wilderness.
