TASAF Enables Villagers to Construct Road in Zanzibar



Zanzibar — RESIDENTS of Matemwe village are eagerly waiting to see their three-kilometer road improved in the near future following the ongoing construction wok supported by the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF).
Residents mainly youths in Matemwe coastal village, North Unguja village are taking a key role in the construction work, mainly employed as labourers to bui ld the dilapidated road in one of the poor areas of Zanzibar.
"We thank the government for the TASAF project which has made us have easy access on the improved gravel road. The road was unbearable and harmful to us socially and economically," said Mr Haji Makame Khamis, Matemwe village leader (Sheha).
He made his joyful comments during the official launch of the TASAF projects in the village, officiated by the Zanzibar State Minister (Second Vice President's Office) Mr Mohamed Aboud Mohamed in the presence of the TASAF officials led by its Executive Director Dr Ladislaus Mwamanga.
Mr Mohamed said at the event "let us value TASAF projects because it is helping people to get out of poverty and improving social and economical welfare." The improvement of the road is being conducted under 'TASAF III productive social safety net project', focusing on poverty reduction.
Dr Mwamanga said that the project will reduce poverty level by 50 per cent in targeted households mainly affording meeting the basic needs which include "needs for children in education and health."
He said that the objective of TASAF III is "to enable poor households to increase incomes and opportunities while improving consumption".
TASAF III targets people living under the basic needs poverty line (currently 33.6 per cent of the population). All households targeted for the programme receive a basic unconditional transfer ensuring a basic level of support.
Households with labour also have the opportunity through Public Works Projects to earn additional transfers to help meet basic needs during the seasonal draught period.
