Zanzibar International Film Festival
Cool CNN profile of the Zanzibar International Film Festival, and its executive director, Martin Mhando. CNN's African Voices traveled to Zanzibar, for a profile of the relatively young film festival over the summer, during its 2014 edition - a festival that's considered the largest multi-disciplinary art and cultural festival in Africa, dedicated to the exhibition of films, music, panorama and more.
Each year ZIFF exhibits more than 150 films made in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, USA and Asia.
The festival also offers a number of Workshops, Forums and Exhibitions featuring world known artists, scholars, researchers and authors.
In addition, ZIFF offers a meeting and networking space for young and upcoming filmmakers to interact with experienced and renowned film and media professionals from every continent.
This is a competitive festival, so awards are given in categories like: Best Feature films, Documentary, Short/Animation, East African Films.
The festival's official film selection includes the following sections:
- Official competition: This section is reserved for feature and short films, fictional or documentary films shot on film or DV, by African AND Dhow Country directors.
- Documentary section: This Section is Open to all countries in all formats and genres.
- Films in Development: This section is open to video films by African directors, African Diaspora AND partner producers.
With the exception of Lifetime Achievement Award, all films are judged by an independent jury panel.
The 18th Annual ZIFF will take place July 18 to 26, 2015 in Stone town, Zanzibar. Submissions are now open, with a January 31, 2015 deadline. For all the submission details, and to apply, click here.
