Dubai - While women welcomed the move, men expressed disappointment as Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced a Dh100 fine for men riding in the Women and Children only compartment of the Dubai Metro.

The RTA said on Saturday that the fining had started from March 1.

Mohammed Al Mudharreb, Director of Rail Operation of RTA’s Rail Agency said: “Expanding the Women and Children Cabin is due to the rising numbers of riders of this compartment over the past years. We expanded this cabin starting February 15.”

He said a campaign has been launched to educate riders about the new expansion. “This feature was previously restricted to peak times only on a trial base. The newly added space to the women and children cabin has been doubled. “The previous area comprised 15 seats and 70 standing riders,” said the official.
“The Red and Green lines of the Dubai Metro are witnessing huge demand from various community segments as well as visitors who are keen to use it as a prime means of transport. Thus it was imperative for us to look into possible ways and means of realising the satisfaction of our customers, particularly women and children in order to offer them privacy during their daily mobility,” he said.

“All directional signage at the metro station have been replaced and all relevant information of the women and children cabin is being provided such that they could be readily distinguished,” he added.

Commenting on the move, KT reader Gulroze Khan said: “Very good. Many times men have fought with me when I told them to leave the female compartment.”

Another reader Sara Usman said: “This is a good move because many women are not comfortable with men; it is necessary for them and their litle kids.”

Male KT readers, reacting to the impending fines asked for similar fines to be levied on women for riding in men’s cabins. “Why no women are fined when they are in the gents compartment?” questioned Nanak Serai.
