Trivandrum  - Kerala police have come out with an updated mobile application that allows women to send a distress call to police control rooms in case of any emergency as a Women’s Day gift to the women.
The application named iSafe, unveiled by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Friday, has been launched in the capital city of Trivandrum. It will be launched in other cities in the state in the coming months.
A senior city police officer said that the application will be of immense use to employed women who travel alone late in the night. The system helps the police to reach help to anyone in distress as soon as they get an alert.
iSafe enables women to send instant alerts to the control room.  All they have to do is to use the panic button on the app or long press the volume down key of the Android smart-phones.

The introduction of the technology for women’s considered significant in the light of a steady rise in the atrocities against women in the district. Trivandrum, in fact, tops the districts in the number of rapes, molestation and other crimes against women.
According to official data, the number of rape cases registered in police stations across the district rose from 55 in 2008 to 176 in 2014. The molestation cases registered during the period increased from 532 to 863. The total number of crimes against women in the district in 2014 was 1807 compared to 1119 in 2008.
The number of crimes against women has been on the rise throughout the state. The data showed that the number of crimes against women went up from 9706 in 2008 to 13880 in 2014. The rape cases in 2014 were 1283 as against 568 in 2008. The molestation cases increased from 2757 in 2008 to 4357 in 2014. The Kerala Women’s Commission also received 6952 complaints related to crimes against women in 2014.
Various programmes were organized to mark the International Women’s Day in the state.
The Kerala-based Air India Express celebrated the day by operating two all-women crew international flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi from Trivandrum and Calicut respectively.
The flight from Trivandrum to Dubai was operated by Captain Tanya Anand along with Capt Yuvika Sandhoo and from Calicut to Abu Dhabi by Capt G K Sandhu and Capt Poonam Soste.
The female students of Trivandrum Engineering College launched a campaign for removal of restrictions from their movements beyond 6.30 pm on the occasion. The campaign titled ‘Break the Curfew’ was launched on the Facebook.

The students behind the campaign said that the restriction had adversely impacted their studies. They said they were hindering them from taking part and contributing in projects and presentations that are part of the academic activities.
