Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) is working out a scheme to make a shift to more sophisticated option of prepaid electronic meters from the prevailing Luku system next month, amid public complaints over its inefficiency.
Tanesco Public Relations Manager Adrian Severin said that the company was planning to install the state-of-the-art prepaid electronic system that would be faster, more efficient and more competent than the current system.
The name of the new system could not be immediately established, pending discussion between Tanesco and an undisclosed tender bidding company due to completion this month.
According to Severin, the prevailing Extended Vending Gateway (EVG) system operates with minor hitches, saying; “we are still using EVG that operates without serious problems though there were some failures last week.”
He was referring to power blackout that rocked subscribers to the luku system that operates through mobile money, mobile banking and maxmalipo across the country last week, causing public speculation that the mayhem might have been caused by an installation of a new prepaid electronic meter system.
However, it was the fourth time in two months starting January 11 that the EVG system collapsed, driving subscribers to the system into enduring four days of blackout that froze both business and domestic power driven activities.
