Zanzibar — THE Zanzibar Ministry of Health has announced that at least 162 people mainly children have suffered bloody diarrhoea in the first 12 weeks of this month (March).
Head of the Zanzibar Epidemiology and Diseases Surveillance Unit (ZEDS Unit) Dr Salma Masauni Yussuf said in a statement that the recorded blood diarrhoea cases include 43 in Pemba Island.
"We should take health precautions to minimize risks of Cholera, Typhoid and dengue fever during this rain season. We should at least boil drinking water," said Dr Yussuf.
She said many dysentery cases were reported from North 'A' district in Unguja and Micheweni District in Pemba. "We should also keep our environment clean and have proper sanitation," Dr Yussuf said.
Poor sanitation and shortage of water in recent months is blamed for the dysentery because many people are prompted to use unsafe water from unprotected wells and ponds.
