The party’s Secretary General Dr Wilbroad Slaa accused the CCM led government of going against the constitution by ‘making the people accountable to the government instead of the government being accountable to the people who gave it mandate to rule.’
The development came about yesterday when Chadema took Mwanza City in the lake zone by storm with multitudes of supporters escorting the party’s leaders from Mwanza airport to the city centre.
The motorcade of Chadema top leaders and outgoing members of parliament drove throughout Makongoro and Kenyatta roads in the city centre before heading to the Magomeni grounds where they addressed a public rally.
At the rally, the party officially issued party cards to former CCM legislators—James Lembeli and Easter Bulaya who defected to Chadema at the start of the week.
Speaking at the rally, Dr Slaa called on Tanzanians not to make the ‘mistake of electing CCM back into power.’
“Chadema is a serious party and is prepared to form the government that will bring about change and prioritise welfare development,” he said.He said if elected to power, Chadema will ensure the people are recognised as provided for in the constitution. According to him, the current situation is that the government has more power than wananchi.
“All Tanzanians are facing economic hardship and other problems regardless on their positions in the society,” he said.
Dr Slaa warned candidates vying for elective posts under the Chadema ticket not to be bought by the ruling party to sabotage the party, warning them of legal actions to be taken against them.
Chadema National Chairman Freeman Mbowe said that the party is still discussing the possibility of fielding one presidential candidate for the opposition through Ukawa.
“Our fellow leaders of political parties which form Ukawa were supposed to be here today with us but they have failed to attend because they are still in negotiations on the issue of a single presidential candidate,” he said pledging that their candidate would be announced at a later time.
He called on the public to turn up in masses and vote for Chadema candidates come the voting day, October 25 this year.
Mbowe presented Chadema party cards to Lembeli and Bulaya who defected from the ruling CCM top join the opposition. Bulaya was CCM Special seat MP while Lembeli was MP for Kahama.
Speaking after receiving the cards Bulaya advised the youth not to be used by greedy politicians to advance their personal interest.
Bulaya said it is the responsibility of the youth to liberate the country and urged them to be strong because ‘the future of this nation belongs to the youth.’
On Lembeli’s part he revealed that; “ before I made the decision to defect, I prayed and involved my family. The family agreed with my decision and my conscious told me that Chadema is the right party to join.”
