THE 19th Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) will open on July 9th next year in Stone Town. It will close on the 16 of the month.

The event’s Assistant Festival Director, Daniel Nyalusi, made this announcement at the end of this year’s chapter on Saturday.

He also explained why they had chosen “This Journey of Ours” as the event’s theme, which he referred to as being “yet complex in its implications.” “Any journey is symbolic of life, with its trials and tribulations, its highs and lows and with its destinations that change with time.

On the road of life the journey transforms us through its bends and long stretches making speed a companion of ours like the shadow,” Nyalusi explained.

On the same topic, in his closing address to the audience the Festival Director, Professor Martin Mhando elaborated further on the reasoning behind their choosing this theme when he said that journeys lead people to crossroads. This leads to dramas being made of any choices; he maintains, however, the fact remains that people are still travelling onward, even though they may actually have taken a detour.

He posed the question as to what happens when travellers get lost and went straight on to answer with another question, as to whether or not these travellers simply sit down, cry and give up.

Then he answered his own question with a strong “no and that they continue with their journey, trying new routes completely full of hope and anticipation.

Before moving onto another aspect of next year’s episode of the event, which is also known as “The Festival of the Dhow Countries,” Mhando also said that many “journeys portend destinations but destinations do not define journeys for every trip of our lifetime teaches us perseverance, patience and inspires motivations.”

His closing point on this aspect of the theme is that, however, easy or tough the journey might have been, destinations often inspire new journeys.

He also reminded the audience of the closing date being July 16, for what has been recognised, as the largest multi disciplinary art and cultural festival in East Africa.
