Lowassa: I've lasting solutions to problems.

Presidential candidate of Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo CHADEMA) representing the Coalition for Defence of the Peoples Constitution (Ukawa), Edward Lowassa.
Presidential candidate of Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo CHADEMA) representing the Coalition for Defence of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa), Edward Lowassa has appealed for votes from residents of Katavi saying he has long-term solutions to their problems, but he needed presidential platform for their execution.

Addressing a mammoth rally at Mwangaza Primary School grounds in the regional capital, Mpanda on Thursday, Lowassa promised to come up with a long-term settlement to end what are believed to be chronic land-related conflicts in the country and those facing educators.

He pledged to end the long-standing conflicts between farmers and pastoralists by forming a special commission to solve the historical problem whose solution never rained on Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) government in its more than 50-year stay in power.

He also vowed to connect the western regions including Rukwa and Katavi with tarmac roads to end what he called “regional blockade” from other parts of the country owing to bad infrastructure.

“Let’s use the October 25 elections to bring changes to our nation,” he told the mass. The aspirant from Ukawa, a merger of three other parties including the Civic United Front (CUF), NCCR-Mageuzi and National League for Democracy (NLD) also pledged to boost the ruined welfare of educators saying it would be a key priority if elected into power.

Acknowledging agriculture as major occupation of the people of Katavi, the former premier said his government would, among others, subsidize with farming inputs such as fertilizers and abolish unnecessary levies for crops.

“I’m aware that you are good producers of maize and rice. I promise to bring changes into your farming activities… and that levies will be no more,” he told the farmers in Mpanda.

Taking a relay stick from Lowassa, Chadema national chairman Freeman Mbowe also assured civil servants that they will have more room for professional freedom and action, allaying fears that their welfare will be tempered with at their detriment once Ukawa goes to the State House.

“We’ll leave everyone intact and we’re not going to disturb anyone in the public service, so people should have no reason to worry about their welfare once we win the next month general election,” he assured public workers across the nation.

Chadema candidate for Mpanda parliamentary seat Jones Kilinde also pledged to boost Mpanda to a tourist and an investment Mecca as well as an employment pool for youth saying he would lure an army of investors into all sectors including the Mpanda promising semi-processing industry.

“This in turn will create employment for people living in this area,” he said, pledging to team up with tourism authorities for suitable infrastructures to attract visitors to the region’s tourist destinations including the famous Katavi National Park.
