TANZANIA Labour Party (TLP) yesterday launched its Union presidential campaign in Dar es Salaam with a promise by its candidate, Mr Maximillian Lyimo, to transform Parliament by including representatives from all groups.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Temeke, the candidate said that having a diversified Parliament with representatives from all walks of life would be a clear indication of true democracy.
TLP launched its campaign at Mwembeyanga grounds with the party’s senior officials hinting that Mr Lyimo was the right candidate who could take the country far.
Mr Lyimo promised to restructure Parliament to make sure that those who cannot vie for political posts are well represented to bring equality.
Key highlights of the promises he made include changing the country’s education system to make it more competitive as well as adapt to the changing dynamics of education, science and technology.
Mr Lyimo further said that on education focus will be on three issues which are religious education, self reliance to help those who graduate to employ themselves and free education to all.
On the issue of the country’s natural resources, he said that the country was blessed with gold, nickel and other minerals, but they must be well utilised to increase per capita income.
“The whole world knows how blessed we are, we have a lot of natural resources which have been largely exploited by foreigners,” said Mr Lyimo “We cannot continue to live in poverty while what we have is enough to finance a better life not only in Africa but the world at large,” he added.
If elected, he said, he will make good use of the country’s natural resources as he has experience and expertise in dealing with minerals.
Mr Lyimo went on to say that he will make sure peace and tranquility are maintained and bring an end to indiscriminate killings of people with albinism which angers God, adding that he has been sent to save the country.
He also noted that there is a need to address the high rate of unemployment in the country by first equipping the youth and women with necessary skills, allocating necessary resources to women and youth as well as promoting equity and equality across all genders and generations.
The TLP candidate said that his government, should he ascend to power, will ensure young people and women are given an opportunity to serve the nationand are facilitated to start businesses as well as venture in other productive and income generating activities.
Earlier, TLP Deputy Secretary General, Ms Dominata Rwechungura, said they have already launched their manifesto which mainly focuses on education and health and it will be used to govern the country.
“Our priority is education in which we will provide self reliance education to standard seven pupils to help them after completing primary school,” she said.
TLP Secretary General, Ms Nancy Mrikaria, said on the issue of health they will make sure district hospitals are provided with necessary medicine and equipment.
“We believe one needs to be healthy to be able to produce, we will start with hospitals from grassroots and we will value district hospitals as we will be providing free education that means we will be having enough doctors,” she said.
Ms Mrikaria said that Tanzanians should make sure they choose wisely the people they want to lead them without being influenced by money or other material gains.
