“The number of voters is small compared to the United Kingdom. The results and the winner can be known in only four to six hours after polling stations are closed,” Mr Hamad said yesterday when campaigning in North Unguja.
He said Zanzibaris want to know about their next president soon after voting and that any delay to announce the winner may raise anxiety. “I, the expected winner and my supporters, want to celebrate and losers should prepare to weep,” Mr Hamad said in Mkwajuni constituency.
He also campaigned in Dimani constituency where he urged EC to be transparent throughout the electoral process, particularly during voting, counting, tallying and release of results. He said that he is confident of victory.
Mr Hamad dismissed as ‘untrue’ allegations that his followers plan to sabotage the election by remaining 200 metres away from polling stations on the pretext of guarding votes. “We call for peace and stability, but any attempt to cheat us will not be tolerated,” he said.
He reiterated his promise of developing Zanzibar to have a vibrant economy like Singapore or Mauritius within a short time.
“We are determined and committed to fulfil our promise. We have workable plans that will see Zanzibar change dramatically to a better place for all of its citizens,” said Mr Hamad.
