Chama Cha Mapinduzi presidential candidate Dr John Magufuli has vowed to safeguard the Union and clear the remaining challenges facing it immediately after being elected to the post.

Addressing hundreds of people at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Zanzibar town yesterday,  Dr Magufuli said that if elected he will collaborate with the Zanzibar president to strengthen the  Union.

“I am aware that there have been a number of challenges facing the Union but I have been informed that they remain only three. I assure you that I will work on them immediately if elected to the post,” he declared.

He explained that it is possible to address the challenges because his running mate Samia Suluhu Hassan, the prospective Vice President has been working on Union Affairs for several years.

“Suluhu has been working as the Minister of State in the Vice President Office charged with Union Affairs. She has experience on these issues thus it will be easy for the government to work on the remaining challenges,” the ruling party candidate underlined.

He reiterated the position that he was not contesting for the post as a trial matter but is confident that he is capable of leading Tanzanians.Dr Magufuli pledged to fight unlawful acts like illegal fishing in Tanzania’s deep sea zone as part of his strategy to control national resource exploitation.

He said he will strengthen defense and security organs by providing them with special training and modern working tools for fighting acts of banditry and lawlessness.

“If elected I will collaborate with Dr Shein to fight robbery of our marine resources… I will provide modern tools to our defense and security organs to make such controls successful,” Dr Magufuli said.
He commended Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein for upholding peace and promoting Zanzibar development.

The Zanzibar government did excellent work in improving social services including roads, water, electricity and health facilities, he said, pledging to intensify collaboration with Dr Shein to bring more development to the country as a whole.
For his part Dr Shein who is contesting for the Zanzibar presidency called upon the people to vote for Dr Magufuli because he is hard working and cooperative.

He said that he was comfortable to work with and foster greater cooperation with Dr Magufuli  in promoting the country’s development.
Vice President Dr Gharib Mohamed Bilal called upon Tanzanians to ignore rumors that CCM was planning to steal votes so as to with the general elections.

He said that such rumors should be ignored because the country is led by observing democratic principles and that is why it has allowed election observers to monitor the entire process.
