Voters pledge to honour NEC’s directives!

VOTERS in Rukwa Region have pledged to adhere to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) election guidelines to ensure that peace and tranquility is maintained during and after the voting process.

They also pledged to be role models in the forthcoming general election. Such inspiring pledges were made by several participants who attended a two-day workshop organised and coordinated by a non-governmental organization (NGO) named SUMANGO which was held here in the municipality over the weekend to enlighten participants on the virtues of peace during and after next Sunday’s general elections.

“All political party supporters as well political leaders have a very important role to play in making sure that we cast our votes calmly and peacefully,” said a participant. “So we pledge here today that we will be role models in the upcoming elections in ensuring that peace and tranquility is maintained on polling day, “ said John Felix, a resident of Sumbawanga municipality.

The participants further insisted that if they play their part properly they will surely help to bring positive results not only to this election but even after the whole exercising of counting and announcement of results.

“We urge our political parties and all other stakeholders during the few days remaining to use their platforms for preaching peace,” said Ms Maria Antony, another participant.

The participants also pledged that they will not remain at the polling stations without any valid reasons because they have been enlightened during the workshop where they were told that it was against the law.

The positive responses from the participants came after a NEC official told them that it is very dangerous to remain at the voting centres after casting their votes.

“That is contrary to the requirement of the Election Act, Section 104(1) Chapter 343,” she said , adding “You must be aware that remaining at the polling stations is against the law because there is a number of negative occurrences which can crop up if people or groups of people are allowed to remain at the centres.

One of such occurrences is the possibility of a chaotic situation which might involve people preventing others from entering the voting rooms, she said.
