Magufuli curbs foreign travel by govt officials!

PRESIDENT John Pombe Magufuli yesterday banned public officials from travelling abroad on duty until further notice, saying foreign activities would from now on be done by the country’s envoys.

The president issued the directive during a meeting with permanent secretaries (PSs) and their deputies, the governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Professor Benno Ndulu and Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Commissioner General, Mr Rished Bade.

He said in case of emergency officials would be allowed to travel abroad after securing express permission from him (the president) or the Chief Secretary.

“From now on government officials should instead go to the people in the villages to learn, understand and solve a myriad of problems our people are facing,” said Dr Magufuli, who was on the third day, since taking office.

He challenged all civil servants to strive at working hard, diligently, professionally and honestly to enable the nation realise its goals and the government deliver on election pledges.

“The government must now be seen to implement all election promises with great zeal, diligently and efficiently,” Dr Magufuli said. He, however, urged public officials to execute their duties ethically and in accordance to the law, regulations and relevant standing orders.

President Magufuli told the officials to draw up strategies to ensure smooth implementation of the government’s decision to abolish school fees in primary schools up to Form Four effective January 2016.

He also directed the officials to work out strategies to improve provision of loans to students in universities and other institutions of higher learning.

The president strongly urged TRA to improve collection of the government’s revenue by casting the tax net wider. “You must work fairly and more professionally without fear or favour.

Please get hold of the rich and big businesses, instead of running after petty traders, food vendors and other small time operators. “We must get rid of nuisance taxes and stop harassing poor people,” he said.
