Ban imposed on e-cigarettes, e-shisha

Ban imposed on e-cigarettes, e-shisha
Dec. 13: Electronic-cigarette and shisha are now banned in Sultanate. The decision by Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) on Sunday, which is based on the Royal Decree No 26/2011 and the Consumer Protection Law, came after a study found cancer-causing elements in these items.

Sellers of e-cigarettes or e-shisha will face a fine of RO 500. Repeat offenders will face double the fine.

The PACP also banned the trading of ready-made clothing and footwear which are deemed offensive to religions or supportive to terrorist organisations as well as those with indecent or obscene phrases and images.

Violators will face a RO 500 fine. Repeated violations attract RO 50 per day. Intensified inspections across the country will take place in the coming days to monitor the market for banned products and indecent clothes

One year back, the Muscat Municipal Council has suggested ban on smoking in public places. A Municipal Council member said that the decision will be enforced across the whole Sultanate.
Sultanate spends millions of rials to treat smoking related ailments, a health ministry official said. He said many people have complained about passive smoking in public places.

The Muscat Municipality had banned smoking in enclosed public areas and the offenders face fines of RO 100 to RO 300.

Smoking is already banned in all enclosed areas including government buildings, medical centers and hospitals, clinics, educational institutions, industries, commercial centres and markets, restaurants and coffee shops and clubs.

Moreover, the Muscat Municipality has banned the sale of cigarettes in residential areas. The Muscat Municipality also issued a decision banning smoking shisha after midnight in cafes.

The decision was not new according to a reliable source at the Muscat Municipality but was part of the regulations and law to monitor the activity of shisha cafes.

A letter was sent to many cafes warning of the fines they might face if they offence the rule as the
restaurant’s licence might be suspended and the cases will be referred to the Public Prosecution.
