Majaliwa graces employers gala: Prompt taxes, no bribes

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed all employers to ensure they pay taxes on time and stay away from corrupt practices.
This follows the recent crackdown to the business community that unveiled the loss of 329 containers at the Dar es Salaam port including more than 2,000 other containers having not paid taxes.
Speaking at the Employer of the Year Awards ceremony organized by the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) held at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam, the premier warned tax evaders in the services sector to prepare as strong action would be taken against them.
He said that in order to promote and strengthen the country's economy, employers are required to run their businesses by paying taxes and avoid acts of corruption.
“Tax evaders weaken our economy and corruption should be addressed seriously like what was being said by the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Nyerere who said corruption should be dealt with seriously as it is a bigger impediment to people’s welfare than an outbreak of war,” he said.
Majaliwa said that tax collection and controlling revenues are other important areas which the government has focused on, noting similarly that the previous administration worked hard to control tax evasion.
“Due to these efforts, the previous administration managed to raise tax collection from Sh100 billion per month in 2005 up to Sh900 per month in 2015,” he said, underlining that this is a satisfactory achievement that has been registered.
Handing over the trophy to Tanzanian Breweries Limited (TBL), winner of the Employer of the Year 2015 (AYE) award, Majaliwa commended the company for emerging number one among firms that had managed to mobilize human resources, increasing productivity and build good relationships at workplaces.
ATE executive director, Dr Aggrey Mlimuka said that the 2015 Employer of the Year Awards is the 9th award to be handed to different companies in Tanzania since its inception in 2005.
Following good reception of the award, this year 135 companies filled questionnaires and among them 63 succeeded to participate in the awards run.
Preparations to the competition are conducted by an independent consultant who works hard to ensure ATE gets the right winner to be known immediately as the award presentation exercise is completed, the director noted.
TBL was followed in the award ranking by Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) and second runner-up was Kilombero Sugar Limited.
In the various sub-categories, award winner for general human resources policy and protection category was TiGo, while the staff training and development category was won by CRDB Bank. Performance management category was picked up by overall winners TBL and the pay and benefits category was also won by TiGo.
In employee relations category the winner was Kilombero Sugar Limited, while in HIV/AIDS intervention the same company picked the prize.
Occupational health and safety category award went to Geita Gold Mine (GGM) and the equal employment opportunities and diversity award was picked by CCBRT.
