On October 29, this year, Zanzibar Election Commission (ZEC) Chairman Jecha Salim Jecha nullified the election results and fresh polls would be called at a date to be announced later.
He cited that the reason led to it was due to massive irregularities and results’ cheating like double-voting.
“The process was not fair and had breaches of the law... I declare all the results null and void,” he clarified.
Some of the flaws were rampant dispute among agents, many votes, mainly on Pemba Island surpassing the number of voters in the register and some candidates declaring themselves winners contrary to the laws.
Jecha said fresh elections in the Isles would be arranged later.
However, ZEC statement drew immediate reaction from Civic United Front (CUF) Zanzibar presidential candidate; Seif Sharif Hamad, who opposed the need.
“The elections were free and fair. We want to see the process of tallying continuing and ZEC to declare the winner. This is unacceptable,” Hamad retorted.
In another statement that showed disagreement, a ZEC Commissioner, Nassor Khamis, said the statement made by Jecha was not made by the electoral body.
