The World Bank has commended President John Magufuli’s austerity measures including his efforts to increase internal revenue collection, cut unnecessary government expenditures and what the global financial authority described as ‘his determination to improve the people’s welfare.’
World Bank Country Director for Tanzania, Burundi, Malawi and Somalia Bella Bird made the remarks when she visited President Magufuli at the State House yesterday in Dar es Salaam.
The two leaders held extensive discussions on how the two would cooperate in development projects.
In their talks, Bella highlighted that the World Bank has supported 29 projects in Tanzania valued at USD4billion and pledged to continue working together with the fifth phase government other projects.
Briefing reporters, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Dr Servacius Likwelile named the projects to include expansion of the Dar es Salaam Port, construction of the modern Central Railway line with ‘Standard Gauge’ and development of agriculture in the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT).
Other projects include those implemented by the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF), Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) and construction of a Flyover Bridge at the Ubungo Junction along Morogoro Road in Dar es Salaam.
