ZANZIBAR Second Vice-President, Seif Ali Iddi, has assured Union President Dr John Pombe Magufuli that the situation in the island is stable and that its residents are waiting for the re-run polls on a date to be announced later.
A statement issued by the State House said that the Second Vice-President made the assurance after holding talks with Dr Magufuli in Dar es Salaam.
“I have come to deliver the message on the current situation in the isles; I have assured him that there is peace, tranquillity and stability,” he said.
He further said that everything was fine and people were continuing with their normal business, adding that some of the media outlets have been providing false information on the situation since the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) nullified the election results last year.
“Various media houses have been reporting that there is chaos in the Isles something which is untrue.
ZEC nullified the polls citing massive cheating and promised fresh polls which we are waiting for,” he elaborated.
The ruling party CCM has repeatedly said that the ongoing talks between the opposition leader Seif Sharif Hamad and Zanzibar President Ali Mohamed Shein will not in any way lead to announcement of the cancelled election results.
Mr Jecha announced in a televised address that the election wasn’t free and fair and went against electoral regulations. The main opposition CUF rejected Mr Jecha’s verdict, arguing that the polls were flawless and the ZEC boss decision to cancel the results was illegal.
