Minister sacks abattoir staff over embezzlement

Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Mwigulu Nchemba
Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Mwigulu Nchemba  has fired head of Pugu abattoir and staff at Vingunguti abattoir who were on duty from December 24, 2015 to January 1, this year, for embezzlement of public funds.

During an impromptu visit at the two facilities yesterday, the minister also ordered them to report to the permanent secretary in the ministry on Monday for further legal action.

Mwigulu, who visited the areas to witness challenges facing users of the abattoirs with a view to taking corrective action, said there was embezzlement of public funds at Pugu abattoir and legal action had not been taken against the culprits.

“Today morning I made an impromptu visit at Pugu and Vingunguti abattoirs where I realized there were several complaints, including misuse of tax collected from the users, so I decided to suspend several workers due to their misconduct,” he said.

He rescinded collection of taxes at Pugu abattoir and ordered the collection of tariffs from butchers at the facility should be made by using electronic fiscal devices (EFDs).

“This means that the Pugu abattoir will be used to issue permits to butchers in order to control the quality of livestock slaughtered at the facility and not to collect tariffs,” he said.

He also ordered meat storage facility which was built on a self-help scheme and a little amount from the government to be opened for public use.

He also ordered electric power which had been cut off at the facilities to be reconnected immediately in order to reduce the challenges facing users of the abattoirs.

He said in order to reduce challenges at the abbatoirs, his ministry would collaborate with the Ministry of Regional Administration and Local Government and the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.
