The President of Republic of Sudan Hassan Omar Al Bashir has awarded the former President of Tanzania, Ali Hassan Mwinyi an Honorary Doctorate of Political Science at the International University of Africa (IUA) in Khartoum, Sudan over the weekend
Speaking during the awarding ceremony, President Al Bashir revealed that Tanzania was among the best countries which have strong relationship with Sudan.
He further revealed that Sudan and Tanzania’s positive relationship which is still in existence started since the first phase government under the Father of the Nation Mwl Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
He also said that former President Mwinyi was also among the leaders who ruled Tanzania democratically and during his tenure the country shifted from one party system to multiparty system.
For his part, speaking after he was granted the honorary doctorate degree Mwinyi thanked President Bashir for awarding him Honorary Doctorate.Mwinyi also thanked the government of Sudan and the IUA University for selecting him and awarding him the Honorary Doctorate in Political Science.
He said that the chance came to him following the great bilateral relations between Tanzania and Sudan.
He said “I must state clearly that this opportunity did not happen to me as a surprise, but it is through the Sudanese Embassy in Dar es Salaam.
“The Embassy has been liaising with, me and my office from time to time and it has been working diligently to save the interests of both countries Tanzania and Sudan,” he explained.
Mwinyi commended the government of the people of Sudan for its enormous contributions to Tanzania in different sectors, in education in particular.
The government of Sudan has been offering different scholarships to the Tanzania youths who want to study in their Universities. Currently, it is estimated there are over five hundred Tanzanian students who are studying in different universities and colleges in Sudan.
Former President Mwinyi further said for their part the government of Tanzania through the United Nation and African Union, has been working tirelessly to stabilise the peace and security in Sudan, Darfur in particular that had been seriously deteriorated.
In this regards, Tanzania has contributed some of its troops for peace mission in Darfur.
International University of Africa receives students from 86 different countries in the world, African countries included.
The University has also opened university branches in some East African countries. The branches are in Zanzibar in Tanzania, Kampala in Uganda, and Nairobi in Kenya. All those branches are affiliated to the Africa University (IUA). The Zanzibar branch specialises in education.

Ali Hassan Mwinyi was born on May 8, 1925, in Kivure, Tanganyika and raised in Zanzibar (which joined with Tanganyika in 1964 to form present day Tanzania). He is a trained to be a teacher and a Muslim by religion
Political career
In 1970, Mwinyi was appointed Minister of State in the President’s Office Between 1970 and 1972; he was appointed Minister for Health in the Union Government. From 1972 to 1975, he was Minister for Home Affairs.
In 1975 he was appointed Ambassador to Egypt where he served for two years. From 177 to 1981, Mwinyi was Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism in the Union Government. And from 1982 to 1983 he became the Minister of State in the Vice- President’s Office.
In 1983, he was Interim President of Zanzibar and Interim Chairman of the Revolutionary Council. In 1984, he was elected President of Zanzibar, Chairman of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Council and appointed Vice-President of the Union Government.
Mwinyi was elected President of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1985 and was reelected in 1990.
Ali Hassan Mwinyi is a humble person, wise and fond of reading. He also enjoys playing with his grandchildren or tending his fruits garden at his Msasani residence.
