Sir Rod Stewart has denied mocking up an Islamic State-style beheading in the desert and claimed he was in fact recreating a scene from Game of Thrones. The rock veteran, 72, was seen in a since-removed video on a dune in Abu Dhabi pretending to cut the throat of a companion who was positioned in front of him on his knees.
The controversial video was posted on his wife's Instagram account and later deleted after it faced backlash.
Legendary singer Rod Stewart expressed his "deepest apologies" for staging a beheading act in the UAE desert, similar to a Daesh-style execution.
The 72-year-old singer who performed in Abu Dhabi on Thursday night said he was only "playing out Game Of Thrones" and that his actions were misinterpreted.
The controversial video, filmed on a dune in Abu Dhabi, was posted on his wife Penny Lancaster's Instagram account and later deleted after it faced backlash, the BBC reports.
The singer said in a statement: "From re-enacting the Beatles' Abbey Road crossing to spontaneously playing out Game Of Thrones, we were simply larking about pre-show."
"Understandably, this has been misinterpreted and I send my deepest apologies to those who have been offended."
In the video, Stewart was seen pretending to cut the throat of a person who sat in front of him on his knees. The act was similar to the beheadings of dozens of people carried out by British extremist Mohammad Emwazi.
The Briton born in Kuwait is believed to have killed at least seven westerners, including the American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and the British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning.
The video drew a flurry of comments with one person saying, "The Daesh imitation! Why delete if it was innocent! I AM APPALLED!"
Another person commented, "Its' not funny. How do you think the parents of the men who have been plastered all over internet having their throats cut would feel? How would you feel if it was your precious boys?"
Another person wrote: "That video was sick and insulting to all families around the world that have lost loved ones due to terrorism. It would seem money, and fame doesn't stop you from being an utter moron!!!!"
In the another picture posted by his wife, the couple can be seen reclining in the sand.
