- These vehicles are also exempt from RTA vehicle registry and renewal fees.
What's more, the e-car owners will also get a range of other incentives, aimed at promoting green mobility around the emirate.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) have teamed up to roll out these incentives.
E-car owners will get free parking spots in around 40 locations that will be assigned by the end of this year. They will also be exempted from RTA vehicle registry and renewal fees, and get free Salik tag upon registration.A special sticker will also be given to such owners in order to help inspectors differentiate electric vehicles.
The e-car owners will also be able to charge their cars at 100 green charging stations for free until the end of 2019.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa, said the aim is to make electric cars reach 2 per cent of Dubai's vehicular fleet by 2020 and 10 per cent by 2030. According to studies, Dubai expects the number of electric and hybrid cars on the road to reach 32,000 by 2020 and 42,000 by 2030.
He said such incentives will help solve the challenges faced in implementing and promoting electric cars in Dubai.
"We don't see electric cars in the market and we would like to penetrate the market by providing such incentives. I am sure now that government and private entities, or even individuals will shift to electric vehicles when they know how much they can save," said Al Tayer.
Currently, it costs 29 fils per kilowatt to charge an electric vehicle.
"To charge an electric car, it can cost Dh29 as compared to over Dh200 to refuel car of a similar size," Al Tayer said, noting that using electric vehicles will save millions and reduce carbon emissions substantially.
