- CJ Poirier sought help from Twitter so that he could go and meet his girlfriend, Becca Warren, living in Newfoundland.
But it was not all that easy for Porier to get the enormous number of retweets, and he reached out to celebrities to donate their retweets to his campaign, according to a BBC report.
Poirier began the massive retweeting campaign by writing to Air Canada first: "How many retweets to get a free round-trip flight to Newfoundland and see my girlfriend?" he asked. His tweet was acknowledged by the airlines with a response: "What's the population of Newfoundland?"
Hence, this meant Poirier would have to get 530,000 retweets by May 9 in order to get a free ticket, according to Air Canada. Poirier was not able to get 530,000 retweets in time by himself, and reached out some celebrities for help, including the Canadian premier Justin Trudeau and rapper Drake. Seeing his perseverance, Air Canada also extended the deadline and let other 'donate' their own retweets to Poirier. Ultimately, it was Canadian skating celebrity duo Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue who donated their retweets.
An elated Poirier tweeted: 'WE DID IT!!!!!!" and shared Air Canada's post. He also raised $500 on a GoFundMe he created as a back-up plan to his Twitter challenge but has not said what he plans to do with the money now.
Now, Poirier is all set to fly to see Warren next Monday, proving too much 'tweeting' is a boon sometimes!
