The year 2019 had its good moments, of course, but we just can't wait for it to end and 2020 to herald the future, to herald hope. Hope. that intangible and, often, unjustifiable belief in a better tomorrow.
We hope that, in the brand-new year, humans - both children and grownups - will be more responsible towards the environment, more aware of the perils and pitfalls of climate change, and more cautious so as not to abuse precious resources. We hope that democratically elected governments and politicians will be mindful of all of their electorate and not just the majority or those that voted them to power. We hope that, in 2020, the world as a whole takes a U-turn on the path of self-destruction and starts mending itself for good. That individuals and communities don't give up on their fellow beings and support each other in times of distress.
We hope that minorities no longer face persecution and violence because of their religious and political beliefs. We hope that the next year sees a safer and more secure world, free of terror, evil and atrocities. We hope that we manage to stick to all our positive goals and resolutions in the new year. We hope that the forthcoming decade turns out to be one of prosperity, of affluence, of good fortune and abundance for all. We hope that even as the rich become richer, the poor no longer stay poor.
We hope that the lessons of 2019 and the decade that is ending are well-learnt and we are wiser for them. We really hope that the age of artificial intelligence addresses our real concerns, that bots can indulge our emotions and machine learning can cope suitably with human ignorance. Will it, won't it? We'll see, but there's always hope.
