An organization called Freedom House evaluated the political rights and civil liberties in countries across the globe to determine which nations are the freest.

The political rights category refers to elections and government function, while civil liberties refers to individual freedoms. Each category is divided into metrics with four points each. Four out of four is a perfect score, but if a country limits its citizens’ freedoms, it could lose a point or two.

Overall, Freedom House ranks countries using a 100-point system, with 100 being a perfect score — and surprise, surprise: the U.S. is nowhere near the top. Keep in mind that some countries also tied for having the same scores.
