INTRODUCING THE INAUGURAL MWANGAZA AWARDS: SHINING A LIGHT ON COMMUNITY IMPACT!

Dear All!
Three weeks ago, ZNK told its readers that we had caught wind of something taking shape within the Tanzanian diaspora in America. We knew enough to become curious - but not enough to tell you exactly what was coming.

Today, the secret is out.

It is called the Mwangaza Awards.

By Dr. Shaaban K. Fundi, Chairman, Mwangaza Awards, USA and Mr. Colin M. Rutenge, Secretary, Mwangaza Awards, TANZANIA.
  • MWANGAZA AWARDS LAUNCHED: TSh 100 MILLION TO RECOGNIZE COMMUNITY CHANGE-MAKERS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION!

Across Tanzania, organizations are working to improve lives, expand opportunities, and strengthen communities. Many carry out this work with limited resources and little public recognition. Their contributions deserve to be seen, celebrated, and supported.

The Mwangaza Awards initiative was established to recognize Tanzanian nonprofit organizations whose work has produced meaningful, measurable benefits for the communities they serve. “Mwangaza,” a Kiswahili word meaning light, captures the initiative’s purpose: to shine a light on effective interventions and the people and organizations behind them.

The inaugural awards will focus on Early Childhood Education in Pwani Region and Pemba North. One outstanding organization from each region will receive TZS 50 million. Award winners will be announced on December 20, 2026, with the awards ceremony planned for the end of January 2027.

Why Early Childhood Education?

A child’s early years lay the foundation for learning, confidence, relationships, and future development. Access to nurturing, inclusive, and stimulating learning environments can help children begin school ready to participate and succeed.

Yet opportunities are uneven. For some children, poverty, geographic isolation, disability, and limited educational resources create barriers before their formal schooling begins. Community organizations can play an important role in addressing these challenges through practical interventions that respond to local needs.

By focusing its inaugural awards on Early Childhood Education, Mwangaza seeks to recognize organizations that have already demonstrated positive results in improving children’s learning opportunities and experiences.

Recognizing Results

At the heart of the Mwangaza Awards is a clear principle: recognition should be grounded in evidence of achievement.

These awards recognize interventions that organizations have already carried out and the positive outcomes they can demonstrate. Applicants will therefore need to explain their work, identify the communities they serve, and provide credible evidence of the difference their interventions have made.

The initiative values organizations that can connect their activities to results. What changed for children and families? How did the organization contribute to that change? What evidence supports its account?

This approach gives community impact a central place in the selection process while encouraging organizations to document and communicate their achievements.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible nongovernmental or nonprofit organizations with demonstrated impact in Early Childhood Education in Pwani Region or Pemba North are invited to apply. Applicants must provide credible evidence of positive results from interventions they have already carried out.

The application form will open on October 10, 2026, and close on November 10, 2026.

A Commitment to Fairness and Credibility

The credibility of the Mwangaza Awards depends on a fair and transparent selection process. Applications will be assessed against established criteria, with independent judges bringing relevant professional knowledge and experience.

The Secretariat is engaging educational institutions and professional networks to help identify qualified judges. Expertise in early childhood education, community development, nonprofit management, and evaluation will help ensure that applications receive thoughtful and consistent consideration.

The goal is to recognize organizations whose achievements withstand careful review and whose experiences offer useful lessons for others.

An Invitation to Participate

The inaugural Mwangaza Awards are an invitation to eligible nonprofit organizations in Pwani and Pemba North to share their achievements. They are also an invitation to educators, institutions, diaspora professionals, supporters, and community leaders to contribute to an initiative that places proven impact at the center of recognition.

Beyond celebrating two winning organizations, we hope to bring greater attention to effective work, encourage the exchange of practical ideas, and strengthen public appreciation for those improving children’s lives.

Tanzania has many sources of light within its communities. Through the Mwangaza Awards, we seek to help that light reach further - and inspire others to act.

N.B.

1.The application form will be available through the Khaki Foundation website, www.khakifoundation.com, when applications open on October 10, 2026.

2. Organizations do not need to be based in Pwani Region or Pemba North, provided the qualifying Early Childhood Education intervention has been carried out, or is currently being carried out, in one of those regions.
