BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

21st November 2012

President Jakaya Kikwete
President Jakaya Kikwete is expected to launch the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund in Arusha next week.

According to a press statement availed to The Guardian by the Bank of Tanzania yesterday, the fund was established by BoT in 2009.

The statement said the event will take place during BoT’s 16th Conference of Financial Institutions (COFIs), which starts from 26 through 27 November 2012in the city and is to be graced by President Kikwete.

COFIs is a forum that was created in 1980 under the auspices of the Bank of Tanzania. It brings together, after every two years, heads of financial institutions, their officials and other stakeholders to exchange views and experiences on matters related to and relevant to the financial system and the country’s economy.

The theme of the 16th conference is 'Financial innovations and financial inclusion in Tanzania'. It aims at highlighting the role of financial innovations in the country in supporting financial inclusion, as well as the regulatory and monetary policy challenges arising thereof.

BoT Governor Prof. Benno Ndulu said yesterday that the fund was championed by the BoT with a view to sponsoring undergraduate students, particularly female students, who pursue mathematics or science subjects at 'A' level and passed well to pursue degree courses in related fields in local universities.

In addition, the governor said the fund will also sponsor both female and male students in the fields of economics, information technology, accounting and finance to pursue first degree in local universities.

The fund was established on 12th October 2009 in commemoration of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Father of the Nation and an international icon.
