Moheli, Comoros. Exim Bank Comoros, a subsidiary of Exim Bank Tanzania has opened a third branch in the Indian Ocean archipelago as it seeks to extend its footprints in the autonomous Island nation.President of the Union of Comoros, Dr Ikililou Dhoinine presided at the event to open the branch on the island of Moheli.
According to Exim Bank Tanzania Board Chairman, Mr Yogesh Manek, the branch will offer tailor-made banking services as well as facilitate remittances and payments through MoneyGram.
It will also enable acceptance of Visa and MasterCard on the island through the Exim Bank ATM services.
“It will contribute to the development of an effective, efficient and sustainable financial sector in the Union of Comoros, in line with the bank’s mission of taking affordable banking services closer to the people,” he said.
Exim Bank officially stepped foot on Comoros soils five years ago with the opening of its first branch on Moroni Island.
“I am now happy to take part in the inauguration of our third branch in Comoros today [on Moheli Island],” said Mr Manek.
According to him, his bank currently stands on position five in terms of branch network in Tanzania, noting that its focus in Comoro will be to strike a balance between bank profitability and the provision of unmatched banking service to all sectors of the community.
Currently, Exim Bank Comoro has over 25,000 customers. It also operates Exim Bank on Wheels – a specially designed vehicle that plies various locations - allowing those living in remote areas to have access to real time banking operations.
President of Comoros, Dr Ikililou Dhoinine, thanked the bank and expressed his determination to support the country’s continuous development process.
“I believe Exim Bank will be one of the players in supporting this development process. East Africa has a lot of unexploited investment potentials. That is why all eyes of the world are turning to Eastern Africa,” he added.
Earlier, the governor of the Central Bank of Comoros, Mohamed Ali said the opening of Exim Bank’s new branch is a major boost to the country’s banking system.
Exim Bank Tanzania Managing Director Anthony Grant said “the bank has a positive outlook on the economic developments in all countries where the bank operates,”
