Zanzibar youths host second global entrepreneurship week

BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

6th November 2013

Masoud Salim Mohammed, Chairman of the Zanzibar Association for Youth Empowerment and Education (ZAYEE)
The Zanzibar Association for Youth Education and Empowerment (ZAYEE) is hosting the second Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) in Tanzania following a successful launch in 2012.

The event is to be held this month from the 18th to 24th under the theme “Kujenga Mazingira Wezeshaji” which literally means “Creating an Enabling Environment”.
It will feature workshops in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and also introduce Arusha this year as the third city hosting this global annual event.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Monday, the GEW Tanzania spokesperson Lilian Madeje said the event is specifically aimed at addressing some of the challenges faced by youth in the country.

She said GEW Tanzania has grouped its activities in two parts, whereby the first part will run from November 18 to 21, and exclusively center on giving the participants a special treat of inspirational speeches which will be delivered by prominent Tanzanian entrepreneurs drawn from various streams of business.

“Speakers will share with the prospective participants their trials, tribulations, and successes they have recorded as fresh entrepreneurs,” she said.

It will also give the participants an opportunity to interact with the speakers to gain experience on how to tackle challenges that aspiring entrepreneurs face on regular basis.

The second part of GEW Tanzania will feature Startup Weekend which will run from November 22 to 24.

Startup Weekend is part of Global Entrepreneurship Week's signature events which brings together aspiring entrepreneurs to share ideas and form teams to create a business.

She said the concept of Startup Weekend is meant to inspire, educate, and empower individuals and teams to form potential sustainable business firms within 54 hours in a workshop style setting designed for entrepreneurs.

The team will thereafter be given an opportunity to pitch their ideas before a panel of judges after which the winning team will be rewarded with in-kind business support.

“We want GEW Tanzania events to be accessible to all the youth of Tanzania. In addition to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, this year we are very excited to host an event in Arusha and with time, we aim to host events in every city in Tanzania.

The organisation provides youth with a forum to network, generate ideas about how government and the private sector can better understand the challenges they face and to create a dialogue on the role played by entrepreneurship in the growth of the Tanzanian economy,” added Madeje.

“It is important to create a space for capacity building and mentorship for youth, establish
dialogue between young business owners with different sized businesses and across various industries to share their experiences in starting and sustaining business.”

Part of a global initiative, GEW has an international network of over 130 countries across the globe dedicated to advancing and empowering local entrepreneurs to nurture their academic, professional social and interpersonal skills.
